Alexis Ralaivao

Daily Blur

Daily Blur is Alexis Ralaivao's first exhibition with the gallery, featuring two new paintings that explore presence and absence. Ralaivao's work originates from his personal life, often capturing fleeting moments like shadows, reflections, or half-remembered images that exist at the edge of visibility. The exhibition presents two pieces, one in cool grey tones and another in warm colours, reflecting different aspects of his artistic focus.

The larger painting, "J'ai acheté des fleurs pour les peindre, je n'ai peint que leurs ombres" (I bought flowers to paint them, I painted only their shadows), depicts the shadow of flowers on a table, prioritizing the trace left behind over the object itself. The second, smaller canvas, "Le collier rouge de Karlyne" (Karlyne's red necklace), captures a close-up of a partner wearing a necklace, conveying the warmth and intimacy of the moment. Ralaivao, a self-taught artist influenced by Dutch Golden Age painters and Italian modernists, builds his surfaces in thin, deliberate layers, focusing on ordinary gestures and the ephemeral.
