‘Mise au point’

Dominique De Beir

The exhibition ‘Mise au point’ at Hopstreet Gallery, Brussels, features works by Dominique De Beir. De Beir, born in 1964, explores the depth of surfaces by manipulating materials like paper, cutting, piercing, and sanding them. She often works from the reverse side of her materials, allowing the final form to emerge as the surface is altered, revealing traces and streams of colour.

Her practice, which has focused on paper for over two decades, investigates the interplay between building and destroying, opacity and transparency, and durability and fragility. The exhibition includes works from her artist's book, ‘Dos à Dos’, which reproduces drawings at a 1:1 scale, emphasizing the plastic power of their reverse sides and the precarious balance between gesture and matter.
