b(EYE)rth r(EYE)ght

American artist Fahamu Pecou's exhibition b(EYE)rth r(EYE)ght explores vision as an inalienable, intimate, and sovereign birthright. The title itself is a declaration, inserting the word "EYE" into "birthright" to emphasize that one's way of seeing is their most absolute inheritance. The exhibition presents a narrative of genesis where contemporary figures interact with African sculptural forms, elevating these ancestral objects as companions and witnesses to Black futures.

The works in the exhibition claim the fundamental right to pleasure, rest, and beauty for their own sake, moving away from demands for justification or political resistance. It serves as an invitation for Black individuals to reclaim their own perspectives and to redefine themselves through their own visions, rather than through the gaze of others. Fahamu Pecou, a PhD holder and Knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters, has had his work exhibited globally and is held in numerous international collections.
