Caminhos
The exhibition "Caminhos" by Marcos Siqueira at Mendes Wood DM Brussels features paintings that stem from the artist's practice of sustained observation of his surroundings, particularly the landscape of Brazil's Serra do Cipó. Siqueira's work is characterized by a discipline of attention to natural details, changing light, and shadows. While his paintings are figurative and engage with his daily life and environment, they move beyond direct mimesis.
The works explore the tension between representation and imagination. Siqueira uses natural pigments, connecting the materiality of the paintings to the territory. The exhibition includes pieces that depict uncanny scenes, such as a figure balancing on a tightrope over a black hole, or spectral figures in boats on rivers. These compositions often feature elements of instability and ghostly presences, suggesting an "expanded, stretched, frayed observation" that continues to work in memory and transforms the observed world into new pictorial configurations.
