The Wave(s) or Newton’s Rings
Galerie Greta Meert presents "The Wave(s) or Newton’s Rings," a solo exhibition by American artist Marina Pinsky. This exhibition features works across photography, painting, and sculpture utilizing glass, exploring themes of optics and light phenomena. The content is interwoven with literary, artistic, and architectural references. The title draws from Virginia Woolf's "The Waves," referencing its layered narratives and descriptions of light, and Agnes Martin's sculptural work "The Wave." Pinsky's practice often engages with game structures and open-ended logics, reflected in the interplay of curves and lines within the gallery space.
The exhibition incorporates cutaway diagrams of camera lenses, described by the artist as "transitional objects" that mediate relationships. These diagrams are presented at various scales, including architectural proportions on the gallery windows, creating an immersive experience that interacts with the surrounding space. Works like "The Grey Cloth or Ten Percent White" feature semi-circular panels painted with protective symbols and overlaid with lens cross-sections, referencing Paul Scheerbart's novel. "Dharma Transmission" comprises slumped glass reliefs of the Alvar Aalto building facade, while "The Crystal Chain" uses fused glass to evoke wave-like patterns and light diffraction, with glass bars resting on concrete "rumble strips" to create interference patterns. The works explore light's quantum behavior as both wave and particle, serving as personal models that invite viewer engagement through transparency and opacity.
