New works
Takayuki Sakiyama presents a new exhibition of sand-glazed ceramics from September 11 to October 3. Born in 1958, Sakiyama studied ceramics at Osaka University of Arts and established his own kiln in 1987. His studio, situated on the Izu Peninsula, overlooks the sea, which serves as a primary inspiration. The artist translates this inspiration into sculptural vessels characterized by fluid, curvaceous forms and intricately carved surfaces. These works feature a distinctive sand glaze and a unique vocabulary where interior and exterior spaces merge seamlessly.
The exhibition showcases Sakiyama's ongoing exploration of natural forms and elemental forces. His vessels evoke the movement of tides and waves, as well as the undulating contours of the sea. The textured surfaces, reminiscent of wind and sand, suggest both the power of storms and the tranquility of a Japanese raked garden. This is Sakiyama's third exhibition at the gallery, featuring new works in his signature palette of beige and delicate tones, with surfaces that recall the shifting textures of the shore.
